Sounds like they were mesting in our area. They are one of our hammock nesting species that sometimes nests in urban backyards.
A couple of years BA(Before Andrew) I was walking out of the old nature center at Castellow Hammock when a Brown Thrasher flew by. IT HAD NO TAIL. Roger Hammer happened to be in his office
and told me that a sharp-shinned hawk had made a grab at the bird and its tail ripped off. It managed to fly without a tail, but not very well.
As I went out to my car this morning (SW55th Ave and SW78th ST) two white-crowned pigeons flew by.

: Today I saw Brown Thrasher singing on top of a tree in the intersection of SW 84 ST and SW 53rd Ct. The bird was singing its distinctive call. Also saw 4 and heard another around that area. Also heard a Pileated Woodpecker and coulden't find it. But it's arounfd the area.
