Hello Everyone,

I visted much of Florida Thursday through Saturday and had great success with the area specialties. Saturday I spent my time birding from Flamingo up through Fort Lauderdale Airport. Highlights are below. One thing noteworthy if true: about a mile along the road to Long Pine Key I may have heard the
burry call of a Brown-crested Flycatcher, a bird I am quite familiar with from Arizona and nearby Imperial County, CA. I don't want to create a situation where folks are spending gas money to go and look for the bird when I was mistaken, but in case anyone happens to be around there, it may be worth
checking out. I only heard it once and while I was slowly cruising in my car along the road. I stood around for a while afterward and did not hear it again.

A note about Snake Bight trail - I tried to walk this trail in the morning for Flamingos, and despite Deep Woods Off repellant so thick it created a visible layer on my skin, I got hit with mosquitos dozens of times and had to turn (run) back. I see my efforts might have been rewarded, but it was just too much!

Black-bellied Whistling Duck - Pond area of Lakeland Highland Scrub
Un-ID'd dark terns - two distant off Naples Pier, not seemingly BLTE
White-crowned Pigeon - AD Barnes
Mangrove Cuckoo - nemesis bird achieved at Weedon Island Preserve near
small pier at end of the road
Smooth-billed Ani - Exhaustive effort finally awarded with bird along Old Cutler
Road near warehouses
Black-whiskered Vireo - vocal bird about 4 miles east of Flamingo boat launch
area
Florida Scrub-Jay - one heard-only at Lakeland Highland Scrub, another seen
well along Green Trail of Oscar-Scherer SP
Red-whiskered Bulbul - 1 to 2 at neighborhood across from Baptist Hospital -
3rd attempt of the day!
Shiny Cowbird - bird perched in a tree about 3 miles east of the int of Tamiami
Trl and San Marco Rd (92)

I added 16 ABA year birds putting me at 536 for 2008 so far. Thanks for all
the reports and off-list help from a few of you.

Jay Keller,
San Diego, CA
