I stopped again in the afternoon and decided to check out the hammock trail at the north end of the west-side parking lot. I walked to the first turn in the trail and heard and saw a Swainson's Warbler that came up to eye level and called out right in front of me as if complaining about my presence there. Well, I can take a hint, and after getting crippling looks at the bird I decided to leave him to "his" hammock. The nerve.

I then walked the service road again and quickly was the bird activity around the puddles. Joy and Kevin arrived just then, and Rock Jetty followed shortly, so we check out the puddles together and quickly saw a male Kentucky bathing. The one I saw in the morning was a female, so there are at least 2 Kentucky Warblers in this area. Here's a list of the warblers I saw in the two brief stops today:

N. Parula (a few)
Black-throated Blue (FOTS, single female - any takers?)
Prairie (1)
Yellow-throated (1)
Worm-eating (dozen or more)
Black-and-white (couple)
American Redstart (1/2 dozen)
Swainson's (1 inside the hammock, awesome looks)
Ovenbird (a few)
Northern Waterthrush (at least 3)
Louisiana Waterthrush (1)
Kentucky (2, male and female)

A dozen species in a short time and in a small area. I'm sure a look at the entire area will produce at least a couple more species, so we definitely have decent warbler activity. With favorable winds, this Saturday's walk at Matheson may be very productive.
