Late this afternoon we decided to make a quick stop at Barnes after reading that some migrants were moving at the park. We started off at Homeless Hammock where we had Louisiana Waterthrush and a beautiful American Redstart. We decided to walk the nature trail and along the way we had a few migrants including Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, American Redstart and Ovenbird and a Summer Tanager. We walked the boardwalk and then continued our way back towards the butterfly garden where we found a of a variety of migrants foraging in just one tree. We observed 3 Worm-eating Warbler in anticipation to see them glean insects from the bottom of the leaves and we were rewarded. It is always awesome for us to see WEWA. We were happy to see several BGGN, a Northern Parula and a few Black-and-white Warbler foraging.
We continued down the trail towards the cottages and in the trees just south of the Leisure Access Center we saw a small, short tailed bird with two white wing bars. The bird moved up to an exposed branch giving us looks at a beautiful Cerulean Warbler.
It was an AWESOME year bird! Of course since we hadn't planned on stopping at the park on the way home we didn't have our cameras with us, which would have been great. The Cerulean dropped down to some trees out of our view. We searched for 20 minutes trying to relocate it with no luck. Although we did see a few beautiful Yellow-throated Warbler and a Prairie Warbler.
For a quick stop at Barnes we added 2 year birds Cerulean Warbler(#287) and Summer Tanager(#286). Hey year bird is a beer bird. Sweet!
