This is Brian Ahern reporting the Florida Rare Bird Alert for 05/16/03. OKALOOSA COUNTY
At the holding ponds at Ft. Walton Beach BAIRD’S & WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were found on Friday 9th. Also DICKISSELS have been seen in the fields close by (A. Knothe). DeLorme p. 28; Pranty p. 52

LEON COUNTY
A basic plumaged BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was found in small pools 2 and 3 on the tarp with Least Sandpipers at the Springhill Sewage Treatment Plant on Friday 9th (G. Menk & all). The Baird’s Sandpiper was seen again the next day in the pool with cables, that runs parallel to the 3 small pools (R. Lengacher & all). DeLorme p. 50; Pranty p. 69

WAKULLA COUNTY
YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS can be found along Tiger Hammock Road, past the pavement to the area where the power lines cross the road. Further down the road, there is a single lane bridge over a creek and swamp, SWAINSON’S WARBLERS have been found in this area and they have also been heard singing here as well (R. Lengacher). Directions: Tiger Hammock Road is located south of Tallahassee and southwest of the town of Wakulla. To get to it from Wakulla Springs State Park turn left out of the entrance. Turn left at SR61 (Traffic light that comes up immediately) Take SR61 to SR365 (you can't go straight at this point) Turn left and look on the right for Tiger Hammock Road. If you get to the bridge at the Wakulla River, you went too far. DeLorme p. 50

LAKE COUNTY
18 BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS and 4 FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCKS were found at Emeralda Marsh Conservvation Area on Thursday 15th. The Black-bellieds' were in several small groups of 1-3, and one larger flock of 11. The Fulvous were in a group of 4. Both the Fulvous and the large group of Black-bellieds were seen flying over the northern part of the driving route (Airstrip Rd., near Marker 7 on the Wildlife Drive). Also present was one singing YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. There have been 1-2 Chats singing from the same locations since April 5. Both singing males can be found on the perimeter levee about 1/2 to 3/4 mile west of Marker 5 on the Wildlife Drive. Both males sing from the thickets of elderberry that line the north side of the perimeter levee, and occasionally perch on the tops of dead stems from last year's Sesbaenia while singing. ORANGE COUNTY
A dark-morph SHORT-TAILED HAWK was seen at Orlando Wetlands Park on Saturday 10th. It was seen along the trail (C. Pierce). DeLorme p. 81; Pranty p. 176

PINELLAS COUNTY
At Weedon Island Preserve two MANGROVE CUCKOOS were seen/heard along the boardwalk on Friday 9th (R. Smith). DeLorme p. 90/91

SARASOTA COUNTY
On Friday evening 9th 15 - 20 BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were seen at the Celery Fields between 7 & 8pm (J. Royle). DeLorme p. 97; Pranty p. 140

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY
On Monday 12th A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found in an area exactly 1.0 mile south of the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park front gate at the intersection of Flintstone (unpaved) and Peavine (now paved). The Chat is in the brush North and West of this intersection (N 27 31' 26.9" / W 81 01' 23.4") (P. Miller & C. Tucker) DeLorme p. 101

LEE COUNTY
On Sanibel Island, MANGROVE CUCKOOS have been seen for the last several weeks along the Wildlife Drive at Ding Darling NWR. Along the 4 mile drive there will be posts on your left marked R1 with a number beneath; 22 points total. Best spot for cuckoos is 6-8 around the mangrove overlook (M. Brady). On Saturday 10th, a calling MANGROVE CUCKOO was located between point count markers R1 over 7 and R1 over 8. This is about 1/2 mile beyond the Mangrove Overlook (C. Ewell & all). MONROE COUNTY
A late report that on the May 5th, a pelagic trip off Islamorada produced: one BROWN BOOBY, two AUDUBON’S SHEARWATER, 72 BRIDLED TERNS, three ROSEATE TERNS, one POMARINE JAEGER, & one RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (L. Manfredi & all). DeLorme p. 125; Pranty p. 244
