Both Larry and I have been able to get fairly close to the subjects; Larry-Horned Lark, Me-Buff-breasted; but there was much luck involved and I we both shot through the window. My current big gun is only a 300mm and I got an OK photo of the Buff-breasted before it flew. I chose not to use my 1.4X converter. It was just a few feet off the road about 30 feet ahead of me.
With a 500mm + big lens I would have been able to get some really nice shots from the window of my car.
