Yesterday after getting home from doing some volunteer work we got a call from Toe with information that we almost could not believe. Our hard work in the morning paid off in a big way, karma would step in and send us a HORNED LARK! With no hesitation like doctors on call we grabbed the binocs and cameras, packed some water and took off. On our way we contacted Larry to get exact directions which we have to say were excellent. We arrived at 5pm immediately seeing Trey, Larry and Phillip. In efforts not to scare the bird away, we slowly pulled up behind their parked cars. We saw Larry flagging us over with excitement because they had the Horned Lark in the scope. Mariel was first to see the HOLA in the scope, she looked at me and said beautiful! Next I got my chance to see this awesome bird through Larry's scope. We both got great views of the HOLA in the scope!! Rock Jetty would be next to arrive and then Maria and then Toe finally pulled up. Toe arrived right after the bird moved due to some ATV riders that scared the bird. The Lark moved closer to the road giving Toe great looks as well. The storms were closing in quick and everyone was contemplating their departure before the rain hit.
After everyone split Trey, Toe, Mariel and I stayed around looking for the Baird's but no luck. In a nearby field we saw lots of Black-bellied Plovers, Killdeer, 2 Uplands and lots of Swallows. We decided to head out as the rain was getting worse, on our way to Toe's house we stopped at Cutler Wetlands where there were some nice birds. The sunset was absolutely amazing, the colors in the sky were reflecting on the waters surface as well as the birds present. From CW we headed to our next stop, the "Horned Lark celebratory libation" we enjoyed our great brews and talked about the awesome bird we just saw!
Dade county surprises us once again, another incredible bird to add to our county list as well as our Life List. Thanks to Larry for helping us all get the HOLA. Birds seen this afternoon:
