I have been watching an area near Card Sound Road for the last year or so. They have been bulldozing all of the non-native vegetation. Native marsh is growing into place which is creating a good shorebird/duck spot.
I was there today and yesterday, we observed Short-billed Dowitcher, a very early calling LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Black-necked Stilt, Killdeer as well as several waders. I believe that this area is going to have some great shorebirds during the next month or so. Ducks will follow for the winter months as well as some wintering shorebirds. There is still much work that is going on in this area creating even more habitat.
From US1 in Florida City, take Card Sound 1.5 miles, look for a dirt road on the left that kind of double backs. Take this road in a north direction, look to the east for all of the flooded areas. Be careful while driving, look for the many potholes.
