Joshua,
do not despair, your cockatiel is not lost. Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) pop-up every now and then in urban and suburban areas - I've personally seen at least three in Miami-Dade county. No big deal. Over 70 species of psittacid have been reported at one time or another in Florida (a good portion of them in south Florida). Just today I saw a Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) right outside my door feeding on the dates of a palm. I got to about twenty feet from the bird and took some nice photos. Way cool, but I've seen them numerous times throughout South Miami and Coconut Grove and I know they breed here. Personally, I rather see them in their home range as I have in Belize and Costa Rica.
Cockatiels are probably breeding already, not established, but breeding. In fact, quite a few parrots and parakeets are breeding in Florida. When all the neotropical migrants vanish as a consequence of habitat loss, climate change, and WMD's, at least we'll have the parrots to look forward to...yippie.
I always say, if I had a penny for every parrot I see...I don't really say that but now's as good a time as any to start.
WTF mate,
The Rock
