Snail Kites may be disappearing but the numbers in Loxahatchee NWR are pretty impressive for the small area. This has been our most reliable spot in S. Florida for viewing this bird. In the past few years we've seen as many as 30 birds roosting on the canoe trail at the end of Lee Rd. As of last week, we observed at least 6 nests and as many as 8, between 12 and 15 birds. At least 1 nest has young. We observed males carrying nesting branches to females and then the nest as well as perching, preening and vocalizing. A couple of pairs were still mating as of July 2, which was our last visit. I spoke with a few regular birders there and they've never seen them nest east of the canal, which puts them in one of the impoundments. Photographers abound early in the day. Our best views were shortly after an early afternoon downpour on June 30.
