You'd be surprised Alex, about yellowthroats retreating to trees that is. After I spotted the Connecticut warbler at A.D. Barnes, I went back there the next day with some friends. In the afternoon, we spotted a few ground birds(ovenbird, northern waterthrush) that gave us some heart-stopping moments, since we would initially think it was the bird we were searching for. One of those birds that quickened our pulse was a female yellowthroat.
The yellowthroat was spotted on the ground and then perched itself on a small shrub. After a minute or so, it made it's way up to a taller tree, where we spotted another yellowthroat, this one a male. I had never seen them that high up. Hey, by any chance did that bird of yours happen to have a gray-colored head? Just wondering...

Cheers,
Raul.
