Today we headed out to Dagny Johnson in hopes to get our year bird Mangrove Cuckoo and lifer Bahama Mockingbird. Luckily shortly after we arrived we had a Mangrove Cuckoo perch in front of us for a moment checking us out. Shortly after it noticed us it took off into the coastal hammocks. It called out several times before it disappeared. FINALLY!
It was AMASING to hear a Black-whiskered Vireo singing beautifully for a good portion of the time we were there. It took us a while to locate one where it was calling from eventhough it was only 25 feet above us. Once Angel spotted the BWVI we enjoyed it from sometime.
Unfortuntately we did not see the Bahama Mockingbird during the 3 hours we scouted the paved & nature trail. There were some fruiting tree but no BAMO.
In addition the Mosquitoes weren't that bothersome at first but picked up as the birding slowed off. I think we donated enough to the mosquitoes for the week we agreed. Northern Cardinals called throughout the time we walked the paved trail and we even saw a NOCA feeding a junvenile which was a real nice treat!
We always enjoy the scolding and singing of White-eyed Vireo which we found several times today. The humidity was pretty high and we made sure to have water on hand to keep from melting away. We suggest bringing repellent if anyone plans on venturing out just as the great Larry Manfredi suggested to us earlier.
Afterwards we scouted Card Sound Road and the Backcountry areas along the way (with our permit) but, unfortunately did not find anything of special interest or out of the ordinary. We did see a beautiful Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Carrysfort Circle along with a Gray Kingbird and some White-crowned Pigeons as well as some others.
As we were driving home, we spotted some Common Nighthawk and Angel has been wanting to take more pictures of so we stopped by Cemex on Card Sound Rd. A moment after we stopped we saw a beautiful Northern Flicker foraging as it hopped along the ground which was incredible since it has been a while since we have seen one.
Exhausted from the heat and donating to the mosquitoes we beelined home to celebrate our year bird MACU with a Great Divide Old Ruffian, a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine Style Ale. "A seemingly mellow at the start with stubtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness. It quickly becomes aggressive with it's bold hop flavors and huge hop bitterness. Ultimately the big body succulent sweetness and massive hop character come together to work wonders on your palate" GREAT MINDS DRINK ALIKE! - Great Divide
Thanks to Toe, PB & Joe for introducing us to the real world of beers!

Nature is Awesome!
