I spent most of the day on Wednesday, June 4th, in the park. In spite of the time of year, it was an enjoyable day. I find just being in the Everglades is always a treat regardless of the number of birds seen. Having said that, it was quite shocking to see how dried up many of the areas were including Anhinga Trail(canal), Mrazek Pond and Eco Pond. All along the main road there were many Swallow-tailed Kites soaring above and Meadowlarks in the grasses. Other species seen throughout the day were:
Red-bellied Woodpeckers
Great-Crested Flycatchers
Pileated Woodpecker (heard in Mahoganny Hammock)
Eastern Kingbirds
American Crows
Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Towhee
Bluebird
White-eyed Vireo
Green Heron
Cormorant
Anhingas
White Ibis
Tricolored Herons
Black-necked Stilt
Wood Storks
Snowy Egret
Blue-winged Teal (1 in Mrazek Pond)
Avocets (2 in Eco Pond)
White Pelican
Brown Pelicans
In Flamingo:
Ospreys
Laughing Gulls
Little Blue Herons
Brown-headed Cowbirds
Black-whiskered Vireo
Gray Kingbirds
White-crowned Pigeons
Prairie Warbler(heard)
