Birds of North America Online says that cattle egrets first showed up in northeastern South America in the late 1870s and early 1880s. I always heard that they were likely dispersed from Africa by storm events, but I can't find any documentation of this. The consensus is they arrived via natural processes with human intervention. BNA lists the first continental US record from Florida in 1941. Now they have dispersed throughout much of North America.
