Thank you both for your replies. We (my husband Bill) and I are 100% certain about our identification of this bird, which we have seen about six times in the past week, once as close as 3 or 4 feet away. We have examined photos on-line and he is an exact match with the "melanistic" common pheasant.
Not only that, but Bill's family up north occasionally hunts pheasants (sorry), and the way we first realized that there was one in the neighborhood was that Bill heard its call and said "there's a pheasant out there" to which, of course, I replied that it was probably a peacock (or rather, peafowl). There are many in our area, several of which have chicks following them around right now).
But yes, it is a pheasant! We will try to get a photo for you. FYI, it is slightly smaller than a peacock, mostly black/shiny blue/green body, and a red head, with no white neck ring.
