Larry Manfredi phoned me today about a dead royal palm that had recently been cut down at the old County Nursery behind Matheson Hammock Park. The palm apparently had pileated woodpeckers and chestnut-fronted macaws nesting in it. I phoned the park manager and learned that the trees were cut down by poachers who were obviously after the parrot eggs and/or fledglings. This type of incident also happened years ago at the Deering Estate by poachers who were after the blue-fronted amazons nesting in a dead royal palm. A police report was filed regarding the Matheson Hammock incident and it is being investigated.

The Miami-Dade County Parks Department's policy is to not remove dead trees and snags unless they pose a direct threat to park patrons or buildings, and they ensure that dead trees do not have active nests in them.
