Today (6/2/08), I birded the Chekika Unit of Everglades National Park. As most of you may know, this area suffered the brunt of the Mustang Corner fire just a little over a week ago. Large portions of the hardwood hammoock and prairie areas burned, but new shoots are already apparent. In fact, the lush, tender green shoots sprouting in the recently burned areas look a lot healthier than the yellow, dry grasses that did not burn. I saw a White-tailed Deer browsing on the new shoots across the road from the large pond.
Birds seen:
Great Blue Heron-1
Turkey Vulture-5
Red-shouldered Hawk-5
Mourning Dove-10
Common Nighthawk-14
Red-bellied Woodpecker-6
Loggerhead Shrike-1
American Crow-3
European Starling-1
Northern Mockingbird-2
Eastern Meadowlark-6
Red-winged Blackbird-20
Common Grackle-1
Boat-tailed Grackle-1
Northern Cardinal-1
Nothing too exciting, although seeing so many nighthawks sleeping out in the sun on bare branches was interesting. This location is also very reliable for viewing multiple Red-shouldered Hawks and Eastern Meadowlarks.
