Yesterday I completed the North American Breeding Bird Survey for the Flamingo area (the main park road from Flamingo almost to Pa-hay-okee). Mosquitoes were abundant at 6:00 AM, when I began the survey in Flamingo (this will explain the blood stains covering the survey form I must submit to USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center), but all but disappeared once the sun came up. Deer fly numbers were also surprisingly low. Of most concern, however, were the low number of wading birds. Only 1 Great Egret, 3 Snowy Egret, 1 Little Blue Heron, 5 Tricolored Heron, 1 Green Heron and 2 White Ibis were recorded along the entire 25-mile route!

Other species recorded:
Black Vulture-56 (all at Nine Mile Pond)
Turkey Vulture-9
Swallow-tailed Kite-3
Osprey-2
Red-shouldered Hawk-12
Sandhill Crane-1 (heard near Sweet Bay Pond)
White-crowned Pigeon-2
Common Nighthawk-1
Red-bellied Woodpecker-30
Northern Flicker-1
Pileated Woodpecker-2
Great Crested Flycatcher-13
Gray Kingbird-1
White-eyed Vireo-34
American Crow-58
Carolina Wren-2
Pine Warbler-1
Prairie Warbler-1
Common Yellowthroat-23
Eastern Towhee-1
Northern Cardinal-36
Red-winged Blackbird-22
Eastern Meadowlark-2
Boat-tailed Grackle-2
Common Grackle-1
