Thousands of Purple Martin are once more coming in each evening to the roost in front of the Race Trac gas station on the west side of Davie Road (SW 64th Ave.) about a quarter mile south of I-595. This roost has been used since at least 2004 and in the past activity has increased through June into early July until it drops off towards mid July.

I began checking the site this year on May 11 when I was surprised to discover that about sixty Martins were already beginning to come in at around sunset. About the same number came in during my next visit on May 18 but last Sunday on May 25 the number has increased to about a thousand. This evening (June 1) the number of Martins had increased significantly.

The Martins begin arriving about a quarter hour before sunset and swarm around the roost trees as the sun goes down and are mostly in the roost in about a half hour.
