NAMC: Virginia Key and Cape Florida

Trey, Marcia and I covered Virginia Key Ecosystems Restoration Area and Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP. Like other participants, we had a slow day. [Perhaps the name should be changed to NABC.] With the luxury of proximity, I returned to several of the spots in late afternoon, as well as Crandon Beach. At VKERA we had no migrants but several interesting sightings. In Cape Florida we had a few migrants, but nothing exciting. We ran into Chris Newton and Gallus Quigley and deputized them. Below are highlights:

VKERA
Mottled Duck - pair, showing no signs of hybridization
Blue-winged Teal - 2
Egyptian Goose - 3 (as many as 19 have been seen here)
Sacred Ibis - 1
Black-necked Stilt - 8 (2 nests)
Prairie Warbler - 1 bird singing on same territory for 6 weeks

CAPE FLORIDA
Merlin - 1
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 1
Black-whiskered Vireo - 1
Purple Martin - 4 (coming or going?)
Magnolia Warbler - 1
Blackpoll Warbler - 1
American Redstart - 2
Northern Waterthrush - 2

CRANDON BEACH
Sanderling - 21 (several in breeding plumage)
Semipalmated Plover - 18
Black-bellied Plover - 56 (some in breeding plumage)
Ruddy Turnstone - 9
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 8 (2 adults)
Great Black-backed Gull - 2
Least Tern - ~70
