I had better luck this morning in locating the Warbling Vireo. Seen about 9:00AM, it was in a live oak around the picnic tables(in the same general location as in previous days.) Also in the same tree were a Blue-headed Vireo and a Magnolia Warbler (there are at least 2 in the immediate area, and at least 2 more in the Nature Center.) A White-crowned Pigeon was in an adjacent live oak.
When I lost sight of the vireo, I tried playing a Warbling Vireo song from my Peterson Western Bird Songs tape. This particular song was recorded in California (according to the booklet.) The vireo reappeared shortly after I played the tape. The second time I tried this, the vireo divebombed me before flying back up into the tree. The bird reappeared almost immediately on the two other occasions I played the tape after losing site of it, flicking its wings nervously on the second occasion. I don't remember observing these reactions when Larry Manfredi played a pre-recorded tape on Sunday.
Jill Rosenfield independently relocated the vireo at about 1:30PM, but our joint effort to re-relocate the bird at 2:00PM were unsuccessful.
A male Wison's Warbler (and the 2 aformentioned Magnolia Warblers) were seen this morning in the Nature Center.
