Crocodiles, Otters, Shark, and - oh, yeah - Baird's Sandpiper

Bob Warren and I scoped the Baird's Sandpiper Saturday morning around 9:00 a.m. on the well-described little sandbar (mudbar) at Cutler Wetlands. We were pleased to show it to an out-of-town birder who had driven from Orlando to search for it. Later, at the bridge over the creek at Black Point Marina, a big American Crocodile posed photogenically for photos, mouth agape.

I went back to Black Point with my kayak Saturday afternoon and surprised two River Otters in the mangrove tunnel by the put-in. i saw them swimming around as I approached in my boat; when they saw me, both stood on prop roots to get a better look, then split. A moment later, I saw something swimming away from me - back exposed - which sank from view when I got closer: another crocodile, but smaller than the first. Around the small mangrove islands south and west of Black Point, I found a small Lemon Shark (about 3 ft) in very clear water at high tide.

Toward the end of the rock jetty was a 28-ft Chris Craft, high and dry up on the rocks. It must have hit those rocks at very high speed to launch itself to that height. Both windshield panels were broken (one was gone), suggesting human-glass contact; hope no one was hurt too bad.
