I was watching a brilliant male Cape May Warbler last Saturday at Cape Florida that, in addition to the chestnut ear patches, had a bright chestnut streak on the upper chin up to the lower mandible. I have noticed that a few breeding Cape Mays have this while most others show no trace of it. Most field guides, including National Geo and Sibley, do not show this mark as a color variation, but the Peterson warbler guide has a photo of one with it, and Warblers of the Americas also shows an illustration of a Cape May with a reddish chin. I am wondering if this variation occurs in a specific race, or if it just pops up randomly in the overall population. Can anyone clue me in? Inquiring minds need the answers to such pressing questions.
