We were pleased to find two, possibly three anis at the same location on Monday afternoon (April 7)around 5:00.
Having read that people had been hearing the birds, we studied our recording in the car on the way. After parking, we heard something quite like the recordings, not exactly the same, but worth looking for. What we found was a baby racoon crying as it climbed up the siding and into a hole in the attic of the house on the corner. It was pretty cute.
Leslie used her tiny Spanish to try to explain to an older couple in one of the yards what we were looking for. They were very friendly. Later, a young man pulled up in a truck and asked if we had "seen the black birds", outlining the birds' size and bill shape. He was very enthusiastic, and also asked about the bird that sticks insects on thorns.
Thanks to previous posters, and to Trey Mitchell for great directions along with the mottled ducks.
