I was at AD Barnes this afternoon. Not much birdlife, only 3 warblers. A butterfly garden seems to be taking shape near the nature building and there are butterflies everywhere. I had a ruddy daggerwing land on my hand and feed on sweat and sloughed skin cells for about ten minutes (ick). I ran into a couple of park employees, and learned the following.
1. There is a new park superintendent. He has directed staff to do something about the cats.
2. The compromise that the County government has come up with is to grandfather in a number of cats that were already there, neuter and mark them. Any other cats, and any future drop offs will be trapped and taken to the pound and NOT returned. (The employees were in possession of two cats while we were speaking.)
3. Two feeding stations will be allowed, not cat food everywhere.
They figure that in 3-4 years the grandfathered cats will have died off. Sounds a bit polyannish to me but it may be a start. The guy told me something else, too. Basically the cat lobby is extremely vocal. They spout off to the govermnent, parks dept., etc. all the time. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. We need to speak out often and loudly.
