All:

51 folks, including Sally Stein, Director of Programs & a group of volunteers from Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary came out to STA-5 in Hendry County, south of Clewiston for this Saturday's STA-5 birding tour. There were still some of our winter ducks and passerines around but many birds had departed for places North and West. Highlights at STA-5 proper were Great White Heron (white morph of Great Blue Heron), both bitterns, 10 Black-bellied Plovers, Marsh Wren, 25 Caspian Terns, 2 Sandhill Cranes and 9 Western Kingbirds.

On the trip out to STA-5 from Naples, we stopped several times to show the Corkscrew folks birds like Crested Caracara, Limpkin and Snail Kite. The Sandhill Crane pair near the CR835/CR833 intersection that I reported on a few weeks ago that had lost it's nest/eggs to predation or flooding seems to have made a new nest in a more "suitable" location and the female was seen sitting on the nest.

On the trip back from STA-5, several out-of-towners followed Alan Murray and me to see and photograph Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Western Kingbirds along CR835. They were not disappointed. We saw at least 8 STFLs and 3-4 WEKIs on CR835. Alan and I didn't stop at the Deer Fence Canal to see if the Cassin's Kingbird was still in residence but a few others did. I do not know if they found it.

Before making it back to Naples, we saw several Swallow-tailed Kites as well as 2 Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and 3 Western Kingbirds along CR858 -- the Hendry/Collier County line.
