Today I drove with the family up to Lion Country Safari. From the turnpike, just north of NW 25 St., I noticed a Canada Goose in a small pond behind a development next to the turnpike. At first this caught me as a surprise, but after putting the scope on it I realized it was the non-migratory subspecies of Canada Goose 'Branta canadensis plastikitus". All the field marks were unmistakable, including the black head and neck acrylic finish, flat grayigh streaked fiberglass back, glass eyes, and rope from the bill to the shoreline. I would expect it to stick around for a while, but the adjacet house has a "For Sale" sign on it, so who knows where it will end up.
Other birds seen on the drive included 5-6 Limpkin, a Snail Kite, Forster's Tern, Red-tailed Hawk, Purple Gallinule, and 4 Wood Ducks. The Limpkin and Snail Kite were seen betwen MM 79 and 90, more or less. All of these without leaving the car. Can you say beer birds?
Cheers.
