Nina, are these mystery blue birds about the same size as the female Painted Buntings? The Indigo and Painted Bunting are nearly identical in size, while the Blue Grosbeak is more than an inch taller (and nearly twice the weight). My guess is that you are seeing male Indigo Buntings that are still in their nonbreeding plumage (or a second year plumage that is not completely blue). Good luck!
