The TAS walk at Matheson Hammock on April 19 was attended by about 20 people, including many from out of town seeking some SoFla specialties. The day started extremely s-l-o-w; if not for a quick flyby of one of the season’s first Chimney Swifts, the 1st hour would have had less total species and birds than the average mall parking lot.
Crossing Old Cutler to the less developed hammock did finally yield some birds, including our “bird of the day”, a female Orchard Oriole, a species very difficult to find in Dade County. The bird gave some good but brief looks to the group, and fostered some good ID discussions before some chances to compare in size with the scattered Catbirds. The oriole was feeding about halfway down the hammock in one of the open brushy areas.
We also got some good looks at White-crowned Pigeon and Pileated Woodpecker, and had one of the season's first Common Nighthawks. In the back open area, everyone was treated to some “Only in South Florida” birding, including a pair of nesting White-fronted Parrots chasing Hill Mynas away from their territory. We also apparently interrupted a “girls gone wild” photo shoot......
The Matheson warbler drought also ended after 1½ trips, and we ended up with six species, including Worm-eating and Cape May. Our last bird of the day was an uncooperative Yellow-billed Cuckoo, but most were able to eventually see it. Modest numbers overall, but everyone seemed to enjoy the morning.
