Thanks for posting for me "Say's". I've been so tired and under the weather, I hadn't gotten around to it. I saw the bird after 2 PM, perched halfway down the barbed wire fence dividing the two fields to the south of the pole barn, exactly where Trey said the bird should be...thanks buddy. Thanks also to Angel for providing directions to the spot. The bird flew across the street and perched first on a snag, and then on the far side of another barbed wire fence surrounding that field.
I had already seen the distinguishing field marks, but it was barely satisfactory. I decided to walk up to the house adjacent to the field and ask the owner for permission to enter his backyard. Lee Whitfield (I hope that was his name, I'm sorry if it isn't) was more than happy to let me get close to the bird and in fact knew about the bird already (with all the birders showing up over time it was no surprise). I got GREAT looks at my lifer Say's Phoebe and got to chat with Lee for awhile.
On a different note...
I took off Sunday from Eureka Springs, Arkansas and drove just over 1600 miles to Miami, arriving here on Wednesday. I did the drive by myself in my father-in-law's pick-up truck. He passed away last week. He was not a birder, but he had a genuine love for nature. The feeders at their house always attract great birds and he would always ask me what new birds had shown up. I sometimes wondered if he thought I was crazy, chasing those birds all over the place, but I know he appreciated my passion.
I will miss you a lot Andy.
