This bird, which is a hybrid BTW -- notice the whitish/gray neck -- TRUE Scarlet Ibis wouldn't have this feature, has been in this same general area for at least seven years now. Here's a montage from 2001:

Here's another article (News-Press) on the Fort Myers Beach (area) Scarlet Ibis from January 2007. It's undoubtedly the same bird that is being seen this year. Note: the News-Press article is a PDF file so you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it. You can download it for free from the Adobe website if you don't already have it. Go here:

To view the article, go here:

Once on that page, scroll down to the "Scarlet ibis is a spectacular stranger" article and click on the hyperlink to download it. From the photo in the article, one can see that the neck on this bird is not entirely scarlet but has some white/off-white speckling on it, thus indicating it is a hybrid.

Prior to 2001, a Scarlet Ibis was being seen at Lakes Park in Ft. Myers for a few years. This may all be the same bird. . . . BTW, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSEC) does not recognize any Scarlet Ibis as being "wild" per se. They treat them all as "escapes" or from "origin unknown".
