I ve had a Screech Owl box since last winter and was beginning to think there were no takers. I ve heard them in my neighborhood for years, and have seen them a couple of times, but I was beginning to lose hope that they would use my box. The other night I was doing astronomy and I heard one call from the tree with the box, but I looked from a distance for the next few days and never saw one. Late yesterday my neighbor asked what that box was for, and said she heard the strangest call coming from that direction. I did my imitation of Paul Bithorn for her and she confirmed that s the call she heard. So, I carefully walked over and to my delight there he was (no, not Paul): a brown morph Screech Owl sitting in my box with its head sticking out the hole. It s so awesome to know you have owls nesting in your yard, especially in Miami! One time I even heard a Great-horned calling from the end of the block, and I suspect they have nested at Sadowski 2 minutes away. Not really a notable birding report, but just wanted to share the excitement with you guys. Next, I will build a mini airport to see if I can entice some Antillean Nighthawks to nest in my yard too.
Cheers!
