While running a skiff through Lake Ingrahm in Everglades National Park on Monday I stumbled upon a dead branch covered with 16 Whimbrels. A nearby, smaller branch had an additonal 2.
I snapped a quick photo. The tide was high, the sun was setting and they apparently didn't feel like settling into the skinny water no-motor zone north of the lake. During counts I'm always worried about recounting the same bird as I run through the lake and its adjacent creeks and mudflats. It was heartening to see these Whimbrels stacked up. A pair of Lesser Nighthawks were at Flamingo.
