We arrived at the Card Sound Bridge around 7:15 am this morning and quickly added the Brants to our life list! We could hear the Yellow Warbler singing and the tide was low exposing the mud flat where there were Least Sandpiper, Black-bellied Plover, Royal Tern, Caspian Tern and Laughing Gulls keeping the Brants company. From there we headed over to Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park for a quick stop where there wasn't more than a handful of Cardinal, Palm Warbler and a beautiful White-eyed Vireo foraging the trees.
We decided to stop on the opposite side of the bridge on the way back & heard then saw a gorgeous Prairie Warbler fly right past my face. We observed a group of Magnificent Frigatebirds not far from the bridge which were stunning. Afterwards we stopped on the North side of the bridge to observe the Brants again. A few moments later Larry showed up. And we think a hiding Red-breasted Merganser must have knew Larry drove up because soon after he popped up 5 feet from us floating by on the water! We were lucky enough to not only add the Brants to our life list today but Larry was kind enough to let us get great views of them through his scope. Thanks Larry!
We all had good views for a bit including David that showed up while we were there too. A beautiful Osprey was seen flying above the ocean with a fresh catch in his claws. Unfortunately Angel had to get to work so with smiles, a great lifer and the bird of the day in the bag we were on our way...
