On Friday, Feb 29, while conducting research in the waters of Biscayne Bay, I observed one lone White-winged Scoter in the early afternoon. The bird was seen in the vicinity of Black Point, at the end of the channel markers. It was flying from west to east and landed in the water some distance away. We were heading south and away from the bird, towards Convoy Point, and my binoculars weren't handy, but the diagnostic rectangular white patches on the trailing edge of the wings of this stocky, all-dark bird were conspicuous with the naked eye. Lots of Red-breasted Mergansers around for in flight comparison. We had time constraints, so I couldn't turn the boat around for a better look...bummer. I saw another duck, this one all-dark and unidentifiable from the distance...these birds may still be hanging around the bay.

Other notable flybys:
Several F-16 Fighting Falcons out of HARB
US Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin Helicopter

Cheers,
RJ
