Thanks, Tricia, for making me look it up. These appear to be Gold Dust Day Geckos (Phelsuma laticauda laticauda), which are smaller, at only about 4 in. long. Unlike the Madagascar Day Gecko, which has several rust-colored spots at the base of the tail, this one has just three pear-shaped spots. Kona, Hawaii, appears to be the place to look for it, as I can't find reference to it occurring anywhere else. Same genus as your guess, though.
