Late this afternoon, on my way back from a visit to STA-5, I stopped at the just-opened Harold A. Campbell Public Use Area, which provides access to STA-3 & 4, adjacent to Holeyland Wildlife Management Area on the Palm Beach/Broward border. Highlights of my visit to tis new STA were 40+ Fulvous Whistling Ducks and a lone female Canvasback! Other species seen during my brief (about 1 hour) visit:
Mottled Duck
Blue-winged Teal
Green-winged Teal
Pied-billed Grebe
Double-crested Cormorant
Anhinga
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Snowy Egret
Little Blue Heron
Tricolored Heron
Cattle Egret
Green Heron
White Ibis
Glossy Ibis
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
Osprey
Northern Harrier
Red-shouldered Hawk
American Kestrel
Common Moorhen
American Coot
Killdeer
Greater Yellowlegs
Lesser Yellowlegs
Caspian Tern
Black Skimmer
Mourning Dove
Common Ground-Dove
Belted Kingfisher
Eastern Phoebe
Palm Warbler
Savannah Sparrow
Red-winged Blackbird
Boat-tailed Grackle
I see tremendous birding potential for this new stormwater treatment area; I think it could one day rival STA-5. The Public Use Area (no fee), which is on Holeyland Road, 5.5 miles west of US 27, is open Friday through Monday from sunrise to sunset. A footbridge provides access to over four miles of trails around various impoundments. Trails are unpaved, though bicycle and wheelchair-accessible. Other amenities include a paved access road and parking area, a restroom and an interpretive kiosk. For further information, see http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/content/sports/epaper/2008/02/10/a21b_outdoors_0210.html The South Florida Water Management District has done a wonderful job of providing public access and amenities at this new STA. It is my hope that funding will one day become available to provide similar access and amenities at the truly incredible STA-5.
