Flycatcher in Long Pine Key

Behind Gate 3 this morning, I found a flycatcher that appeared to be a Pewee. Seems odd for this time of year . . . It was clearly smaller than a nearby E. Bluebird, putting it at about 6". The sun was behind it, so I couldn't get any plumage details, but the shape (including primary projection) looked right.

No problem finding the expected species, most of them singing. One Brown-headed Nuthatch especially pleased me, as I often miss them, and I found 2 pairs of Bluebirds. A dozen Pine Warblers bathed in a small puddle on the trail, one of the adults flying next to me for a closer look. Other warbler species included Prairie, Palm, Yellow-throated, and Yellowthroat (no Yellow-rumps!). All 4 woodpecker species were evident, and I heard 1 Robin.

Butterflies were relatively few in number, but included 1, maybe 2 lifers: Variegated Fritillary, and I'm pretty sure I finally caught a glimpse of one I've been searching for, Florida Leafwing (it disappeared in a hurry). One Little Yellow had a large red spot on its underside, plus small red and black spots.

Good birding,
Susan
