Hi David,
There were several photographers there when I was, about 9 AM, even though the owl seemed very slightly backlit to me. So I guess morning light is good for photography; and anyway I had a great view with an 8x binocular. I am not sure where the sun would be in late afternoon (have not been there late this winter), so I can't say about that.
