There is an avian conservation group in Uruguay based in Montevideo, "Aves Uruguay." They sell nice stuff to benefit avian conservation, and offer birding trips. I also recommend the guidebook "Guia para la identificacion de las aves de Aregentina y Uruguay" by Tito Narosky and Dario Yzurieta. You can find it at major booksellers in the malls of Montevideo. If you can get somebody to drive you there (and it is not easy to get there) I highly recommend a day trip to Laguna de Rocha. It might even be the season to see Chilean flamingos there now. There is a bird blind and everything. There is also a small fishing community near there that take tourists on boat trips into the lagoon.
