ENP field trip 2/9/08

Tentative itinerary for the ENP field trip is below. Please bring water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellent. We will be on graded dirt paths or boardwalks. Our longest walk will be 3/4-1 mile round-trip to the Gate 15 mound. We will carpool in order to avoid a long caravan of cars.

-- Meet 7:30 AM at Coe Visitor Center (restrooms available) Come earlier if you plan to see the Great Horned Owl and chick

-- Royal Palm area (restrooms available)
1) Anhinga Trail for waders
2) Old Ingraham Hwy (short walk) for passerines

-- Gate 15 trail and mound (no restrooms)
1) look for waterfowl, waders, raptors
2) quick search for Brown-crested Flycatcher

-- Long Pine Key picnic area (restrooms available) for pineland species like Brown-headed Nuthatch, Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Towhee, Pine Warbler

-- Mahogany Hammock (portable toilet??) for wintering passerines and nesting Barred Owl

-- Paurotis Pond (no restrooms) for Roseate Spoonbill, Wood Stork

-- West Lake (restrooms available) for lunch; boardwalk for wintering passerines

-- Flamingo area (restrooms available)
1) scan flats for gulls, terns and waders
2) Eco Pond for Black-necked Stilt
