Not to rain on anybody's parade, but the bird in Trey's photos is a Great Crested, IMHO. There is not enough contrast between the nape and throat (which really stands out in Ash-throated) and there is too much contrast against the white edges of the tertials. I believe it is a worn adult Great-crested. I have seen Ash-throated before and unfortunately, the bird in Trey's photo doesn't do it for me.

Yes, the Ash-throated is slightly smaller than the Great-crested but you will not be able to tell unless they were side by side, and the bill is just slightly smaller. I keep reading about people hearing the Ash-throated, but they fail to describe the call. I'm not saying they didn't, but describing the call would help with the verification process - remember, they sound different in winter.

Now if someone would take a photo of the underside of the tail of the suspect bird they're looking at, that may very well clinch the ID.
