Well, At 0845 this a.m. I was beyond elated to see the return of the little hummingbird I saw the other day. This time the lighting was better and I could see the bright metallic green on its back. It is a very stocky little bird. Its head was very dark. The gorget looked black but I know with this lighting is everything. The narrow white neck band was present and the breast/flank area greenish-gray. At 0925 I was amazed to see a second hummingbird, more like the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds I have seen at Castellow Park and Fairchild Gardens. It looked as if it was a female with the light throat(striated light gray). It had a single short horizontal mark at the bottom of the throat. It was much more slender than the first hummer. At 1015 I peered out of the kitchen window to the Firespike just coming into bloom in my backyard. Hovering at its bright fushia blooms was a hummingbird, appearing somewhat different than the others. Under the chin was quite light colored, but the base of the throat looked black. This area was irregular in form, solid at the base, but different length streaks extending upward from this solid patch. Again color is difficult to be sure of. I planted my yard to attract hummingbirds about three years ago never believing that I would actually see them. What a special moment it was for me to see this magnificant little bird.
