Thanks for the referral. I looked at Joels' pic. of the Black-chinned Hummer, but I don't think that is what I saw. What I observed had no facial markings. I looked through one Hummingbird book briefly but still can't match it. I think the bird I saw must have been perching with its feathers fluffed as it appeared so stocky. Also, because of the lighting I saw it under, the gray coloration was probably somewhat deceptive.I also noticed the Black-chinned Hummer had a wider neck band that appeared to encircle the neck, but the bird I saw had a narrow white white neck band narrower at one end and incomplete. With my luck it probably is a Ruby-throated Hummer(since I said it wasn't) after all. I don't really mind though, as I am delighted to have any hummer in my yard. I put out my nectar feeder early this a.m.. I am hoping it will return!
