Hi Tricia: The fox squirrel you saw up north is a Sherman's Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger shermani). This is a close relative of the endangered Big Cypress Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger avicennia) that we have here in South Florida. Here's a photo of a Sherman's i took a few years ago in Glades County.
