I have been birding the last couple of days with out of town birders. The cold weather really made birding very slow to say the least. We still managed to find a few good birds including a very cooperative Short-eared Owl, on the Coastal Prairie Trail in Everglades National Park. We also saw the Yellow-headed Blackbird at Dump Marsh, it was actually across the street on the phone wires. We also had Cave Swallows at Eco Pond including a lone Bank Swallow. Cave Swallows were also seen all around Dump Marsh as well as several of the Turnpike Bridges.
Directions for the Short-eared Owl: Drive to Flamingo in Everglades National Park, go to the R/V Campground just past Eco Pond. Ask at the entrance booth for directions to Coastal Prairie trail. Park by the entrance of Coastal Prairie trail, walk the trail about a mile to a mile and a half? Look for three equal size Green Buttonwood trees out on the prairie to your right. The Short-eared Owl was flushed two or three hundred feet past these three equal size tree. The owl was seen about 100 feet north of the trail in the prairie marsh. It flushed while we were looking for sparrows, it did not fly far and landed to give us all great looks.
