After a wild night of clubbing on South Beach, which had us back home well in time to watch the Biltmore's midnight fireworks New Year's show from our lawn chairs 500 yards from the hostelry(no doubt a compensation for the cancelled July 4 extravaganza because of gold course maintenance), Emily and I managed a full six and a half hours sleep prior to setting off to Everglades National Park this morning. The dense fog limited visibility en route to 50 feet at times, but by the time we got to the Visitor Center parking lot the sun was beginning to thin the soup. The horned owl was perched in a tree at the end of the parking lot, hooting repeatedly to another, unseen owl, who returned the favor. Unfortunately, it was seen off its perch by some protesting crows, before I could point my lens skyward. We took our time and made our way to Mahogany Hammock before we turned back.A stop at the visitor center allowed for a few marginal photos of the owl, which by this time had returned to its roost in the mahogany tree.We observed nothing unusual or rare--just the sea of grass and some of its denizens in the bright light. Here's one sample image ..More photos if the link doesn't work at http://www.flickr.com/photos/joelnrosenthal/sets/7215760360118669
