Today I had the pleasure of taking part in the Hendry County CBC as part of a group that birded the property of Chuck Obern, a farmer who is serious about stewardship of the land, and who maintains a wetland adjacent to STA-5.
We didn't have many species, but the numbers were spectacular, with over 500 each of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and Glossy Ibis. The birds fly low giving good photo ops. There were so many Whistling Ducks, that a constant chirping filled the air. It sounded like a distant field of Bobolinks.
Our numbers were surpassed, however by Vince Lucas's group who did STA-5 for 15 species of duck, some in the thousands. This area seems to be coming a premiere spot for waterfowl. The next access to STA-5 will be Dec. 29th.
