There was an interesting empid this morning at the Long Key Natural area. It had a very strong eye ring with a pronounced teardrop shape, small bill, greenish-grey back, yellowish wash on its belly, and a noticeably vested look to the breast. These features are consistent with Hammond s Flycatcher. The wing extension didn t look especially long to me but that is a feature I have little experience judging. Unfortunately the bird was silent and I didn t take note of the lower mandible color or contrast between the head and back which would have been important in confirming the identification.

The bird was seen at around ten this morning about seventy five yards down the trail that goes west from SW 130th Avenue about a hundred yards north of 36th Court, this is north of Griffin Road and west of Flamingo Road. This park isn't open yet so don t go into the main parking area even if the gate is open, park on SW 130th Avenue. Due to pressure from the local equestrian community the trail from 130th to 135th Avenues along with a trail south through the hammock connecting to the Davie Greenways Trail are open but access is limited to these trails.
