Thanks for the citation. The article pretty much sums it up. We are having similar cat problems at Hoechoka Hammock; people release cats on the land since it is a "church?" and has lots of places to turn a cat loose unobserved. In 2007 we did not record a single nesting of any species. In 2006 we inventoried over 12 destroyed nests, mostly cardinals and mockingbirds. Our night patrols spook about three cats every evening and two of them are tough 'street fighters'. They could probably dispatch a raccoon.

In four years we have gone from nests of killdeer, thrashers, mockingbirds, cardinals, starlings, grackles, red-bellied woodpeckers, flickers, and screech owls to nothing. None. And it is not for lack of land, feed, or cover.
